Tokke municipality, with a population of 2250 has an area of 980 km2. The lowest point is Bandak at 72 metres above sea level, and the highest point being Kvannmountain at a 1537 metres above sea level. The municipality lies in West Telemark and shares borders with neighboring municipalities: Vinje, Kviteseid, Fyresdal and Valle / Bykle in Setesdalen. Tokke lies in the northern end of the Telemark Canal, laying in between Oslo and Stavanger.

Tokke municipality has traditions reigning all the way back to the Viking Age. The export of whetstones is ingraved in Tokke's history, and the copper mines in Åmdals Verk were up and running since the 16th century all the way until the 2nd World War.

Angriculture and forestry also have long traditions within Tokke and still are a valuable resource today.

The new development of the power plant in the 1950s has given a lot of economic growth to the municipality. This has given Tokke the opportunity to become a modern industrial and agricultural region with an evergrowing touristry.
